Facilities Maintenance and Management, Operations Management, Asset Condition Management, Vendors Management
As I navigate my next career move following my layoff, I want to reflect on the evolving role of a Facilities Manager in today's world. The job has transformed from simply fixing what breaks and keeping the lights on to a multifaceted position that operates at the intersection of engineering, finance, sustainability, and risk. Today's facilities manager is responsible for: → Managing total cost of ownership across every major building system, not just repair costs → Utilizing sensor data and CMMS platforms to anticipate failures before they occur → Taking ownership of a significant portion of the organization's energy, water, and emissions footprint → Translating technical risks into actionable insights for leadership → Remaining calm and decisive during critical failures at the most inconvenient times These aspects often go unmentioned in job descriptions, yet they differentiate a facilities manager who merely keeps a building operational from one who enhances organizational performance. This role has evolved beyond maintenance; it is now a strategic position. What changes do you see in the evolution of this role?
