Helping Chemicals, Energy & Industry CEOs Navigate Decarbonization, AI & Digitalization and Large-Scale Transformation

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Matthias Auer about Europe's raw material dependency and what the circular economy can realistically contribute to solving it. My honest assessment: we are not making decisive progress. Despite all political commitments, the economy still largely follows the logic of early industrialization. Raw materials go in, finished goods come out, and most end up in landfill or incineration. Yet the economic case for change is already there. For metals, recycled and primary raw materials have already reached cost parity. For construction materials, recycled inputs are up to 40% cheaper than primary alternatives. The main barriers today are not price, but missing quality standards and regulatory clarity, particularly in the construction sector, where the greatest potential lies. The moment is ideal. We are painfully realising how costly raw material dependency can be.
