Strengthening community navigation through evidence‑based practice and implementation science This week’s One Community One Family Youth Mental Health First Aid training reinforced a well‑documented finding across behavioral health and implementation science: communities don’t struggle because supports are absent — they struggle because pathways to those supports are unclear. Research across mental health services, community systems, and implementation frameworks consistently shows that navigation gaps can delay help, increase stress, and widen disparities in crisis response. Improving access requires more than adding services — it requires strengthening the systems that help people find and use them. As HANDS continues to grow, we’re focused on building on our strong foundations while expanding our agility to better walk alongside families, educators, and community partners. Our role is evolving beyond delivering training and services: we help communities navigate, access, and connect with existing supports — and enhance or complement those services where gaps emerge. Key takeaways aligned with current research: • Navigating supports reduces fragmentation and improves outcomes across everyday, complex, and crisis needs. • Enhancing community readiness aligns with evidence showing preparedness increases help‑seeking and reduces escalation. • Complementing crisis services strengthens cross‑system coordination — a core principle in crisis‑response research. • Building agile capacity supports adaptive, context‑sensitive intervention consistent with emerging implementation models. Our commitment remains clear: ➡️ We learn alongside our communities. ➡️ We grow so families can find what they need — when they need it. ➡️ We connect so crisis services are supported with added perspective, resources, and readiness. #ImplementationScience #EvidenceBasedPractice #SystemsChange #ResearchToPractice #CommunityBehavioralHealth #HANDSinAutism #CrisisSupport #SupportAcrossTheSpectrum #CommunityConnections #BehavioralHealthResearch #AppliedResearch #KnowledgeTranslation #AdaptiveInterventions #ScalingWhatWorks Indiana University Bloomington Indiana Institute on Disability and Community Indiana University Research
