A single networking device with no backup. That's all it takes to bring down an entire organization. At Halodoc, our core business operations, internal systems, and 24/7 Customer Service team all run on the same network. A single core switch was the one device standing between normal operations and a complete outage — with no redundancy, no fallback, no safety net. We fixed that without buying new hardware. The approach: Warm Standby. A second switch we already owned, kept powered on, fully configured, and logically isolated — ready to take over the moment the primary fails. Two steps, pre-labeled cables, a printed port map inside the server room, and a full recovery within 30 minutes. For Customer Service specifically, we added an always-on backup Wi-Fi — completely independent of the core switch — so agents stay operational and continue serving users while the switchover is underway. We ran a full controlled simulation before relying on it in a real incident. Failover completed on target. Zero VLAN issues. Customer Service maintained throughout. Three things made the difference: config parity as a living requirement, physical pre-positioning of cables, and simulating the failover before you actually need it. This post by Taufan Noviana walks you through the topology, the technical configuration, and the lessons from building this on a zero additional hardware budget.
