Reliable water analysis in the lab and the field starts before the sample reaches the instrument. It begins with selecting the sample container, container pretreatment, choosing a sample collection location, collecting the sample, preparing samples that are not tested immediately for storage, adhering to sample storage requirements (such as storage temperature and holding times), and finally preparing the sample for analysis. If the sample is not collected or stored properly, interferences can be introduced, and analyte concentrations can change. This can lead to a final result that is not representative of the source water the sample was collected from. Every Hach method document includes a ‘Sample Collection and Storage’ section to help laboratories, operators, and water quality professionals protect sample integrity from the start.
