Year after year, I find myself returning to a question that grows more urgent with the turning of each season. What kind of people does an ecological civilization invite us to become? While we invest our energy in politics, innovation, governance, sustainability frameworks, and the latest technologies—each necessary in its own way—I am drawn back, again and again, to a quieter inquiry. What if what is most needed is not more knowledge, but a transformation in how we perceive the world and our place within it? My friend Alexander Crawford has also touched on this in his recent essay. This is why the gathering, held in the spirit of Tällberg and titled "Steps towards a Universal Ecological Civilization," feels especially timely. Guided by the tireless Bo Ekman, with Christoffer Chang as his copilot and the Aurora Borealis Foundation team, this meeting brings together leaders from East and West. China has long envisioned an ecological civilization, and now, across continents, we seek to draw even a single straw from this vision and bring it into being. I am grateful to help ensure that the more-than-human world finds its place at the table, as it has so often at Tällberg gatherings.
