***What You Tolerate on the First Contact*** The video is Haaland getting worked on.  Held, hacked, talked at.  And then it's him answering, immediately, every time. The easy read is that he won't be pushed around.  But the contact isn't random and it isn't personal.  It's information-gathering.  Defenders lean on a striker to find out what he'll allow, and they adjust for the rest of the match based on what they learn in the first ten minutes.  What looks like aggression is really a question, and every striker answers it whether he means to or not. What you tolerate on the first contact is what you'll get on every one after it. The part that actually interests me is that he answers early and small.  Not a war.  Not a grand statement.  Just enough, immediately, that the terms get set before the pattern does.  That timing is the whole skill.  The same response is cheap in minute three and expensive in minute seventy, when it isn't a correction anymore.  It's a booking.  And the game becomes about the answer instead of the football. Which is the trap on the other side, and it's real.  A player who reacts to everything stops being difficult to play against and starts being easy to manipulate.  The defenders find that button too.  Answering everything isn't discipline.  It's just a different thing to exploit. I've watched the same question get asked at work, quieter.  Someone talks over you in the first meeting.  You let it go, because it's small, and because pushing back has costs that don't apply to a striker.  You might be new, or junior, or the room might be one where the person who names it gets called difficult.  So nothing happens.  Then it happens again.  Six months later it's simply how meetings go, and nobody remembers deciding that. The professional version isn't escalation.  It's a small, early, unbothered correction.  "Let me finish the thought."  Said once, calmly, in the moment, at the point where it's still cheap.
