Last week, House Republicans introduced the SECURE Data Act and GUARD Financial Data Act, aiming to establish federal standards for data privacy and override state-level legislation. There have been several previous attempts to establish federal privacy legislation, and pressure is growing to establish national standards for how technolgy and financial companies handle consumer's personal data and financial information. For organizations operating in states yet to introduce privacy legislation, the proposed bills should be taken as early warning that consumer privacy protections must be prioritized. That means: š· Establishing clear, transparent policies about data collection and use š· Reviewing current data practices to ensure only data necessary for its defined purpose is collected š· Knowing what personal data exists across the organization's digital environment and where š· Having mechanisms in place to deal with unexpected, unauthorized or unknown data repositories Privacy compliance starts with discovery. https://hubs.ly/Q04dbxTQ0
