I hear a lot of conversations about lowering the carbon footprint in our industry. Most of the time people assume the answer is buying the newest energy efficient models. But there is a massive shortcut that almost everyone completely overlooks. The greenest piece of equipment is the one that has already been manufactured. Every time a facility chooses to keep a core switch running instead of replacing it they prevent hundreds of kilos of electronic waste. It is honestly that simple and the impact is immediate. You do not always need a massive overhaul to meet your corporate sustainability targets. Sometimes you just need to look at the networking racks you already have and decide to extend their life. We have seen companies cut their environmental impact overnight just by changing their procurement mindset.
