Day two of week four site visits for the Zero Waste Guardians training programme featured three facilities, each demonstrating different dimensions of circular economy and sustainable systems. Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) Guardians toured the piggery and poultry (layers) units, observing how livestock manure can be integrated into composting systems, closing the nutrient loop between animal husbandry and soil health. The solar-agro plant (agrivoltaics) demonstrated how land can simultaneously support renewable energy generation and food production. Vegetables grown under solar panels illustrated a model for climate-smart agriculture that maximises land use efficiency. Somarelang Tikologo The EcoPark at Somarelang Tikologo integrates waste management, recycling operations, and public education within a single facility. Guardians observed sorting and processing of various waste streams and learned about the educational programmes that accompany technical operations. ReWaste Solutions At ReWaste Solutions, guardians observed the journey of recyclables from arrival to sorting to baling. The facility processes materials collected from across Gaborone, providing practical insight into the infrastructure required for effective recycling at scale. These visits bridged agricultural systems, industrial recycling, and community education, giving guardians a comprehensive view of circular economy implementation. #ZeroWasteGuardians #CircularEconomy
