Grata is proud to be supporting the electoral law constitutional challenge case led by plaintiffs former Senator Rex Patrick and former Independent MP Zoe Daniel GAICD, represented by Ripple Legal. This case raises fundamental questions about fairness in our democracy, including whether the expenditure and donation caps legislated in 2025 create structural advantages for major parties and limit meaningful participation by independents and smaller groups. We’d love to invite you to join us for an in-depth briefing on the case, featuring: Kiera Peacock, Principal, Ripple Legal Rex Patrick, Applicant Geoffrey Watson SC Moderated by Patrick Warner, General Counsel, Grata Fund Together, the panel will unpack: - The constitutional arguments at the heart of the case - How the laws may burden the implied freedom of political communication - What’s at stake for electoral fairness and democratic participation - The role of strategic litigation in protecting democratic systems 🗓️ Monday, 4 May ⏰ 12:00pm (AEST) 🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/gHtqwtgK This session is designed to go deeper on the case, with a focus on the legal strategy and broader implications for Australia’s democracy. In a similar recent case, plaintiffs Paul Hopper and Melissa Lowe challenged Victorian electoral laws. This month, the High Court found that those laws placed an impermissible burden on the implied right to political communication and they were subsequently struck down, paving the way for transparent and fair electoral reforms that ensure a level playing field for all candidates. We hope to see the opportunity for fair reforms at the federal level as a result of Rex Patrick and Zoe Daniel’s case.  In this webinar we’ll also share how Grata Fund supports cases like this, the importance of strategic public interest litigation in the protection of democracy, and the essential role philanthropy plays in enabling this work. We hope you can join us!
