🌙Till the moon and back! 🌝 The GSSI - Gran Sasso Science Institute has just submitted to European Space Agency - ESA a project idea to build a network of lunar seismic stations in the Oceanus Procellarum, a large lunar sea on the western edge of the visible side of our satellite. The aim is to monitor surface vibes for gravitational wave detection (GW) and exploration of the Moon's internal structure. Jan Harms (Associate Professor at GSSI) is leading the project which will be soon evaluated by ESA. Joseph Weber, one of the most important pioneers of gravitational wave experimental science, was the first to propose an experiment to measure them on the Moon. The proposal led to the development of the lunar surface gravimeter, which was brought to the Moon with Apollo17 in 1972. The instrument failed and no scientific results came out of this experiment. The lunar gravitational wave antenna project (LGWA) improves Weber's concept by trying to achieve better sensitivity to gravitational waves. ⏩Project idea https://lnkd.in/eKm9i_y #gravitationalwaves #gssiaq #physics
