Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Give a pilot a checklist, and he passes the check ride. I wrote before about the three levels of knowledge every pilot moves through: rote, understanding, application. I've since realised that stops one level short. There's a fourth — correlation. It's the one that shows up on the day the smoke doesn't clear on schedule, the ash isn't where the chart said, or the checklist item that "never applies" suddenly does. And it doesn't come from running a procedure more times. It comes from knowing why it exists. In this piece I dig into three examples — Smoke/Fire/Fumes, Volcanic Ash, and the go-around callout that changed after EK521 — and what their histories teach us about training pilots to actually think, not just recite.
