In 1599, the renowned Dutch artist Hendrick Cornelisz. Vroom (1566-1640) finished the canvas 'The return to Amsterdam of the second expedition to the East Indies'. On July 19, 1599, the Tweede Schipvaart, led by Jacobus Cornelisz. van Neck (1564-1638) returned from the East Indies. Detail of a much larger painting in which the four large ships 'Mauritius', 'Hollant', 'Overijssel' and 'Vrieslant' on the IJ are surrounded by numerous small ships and fully loaded rowing boats. In the distance to the right the profile of Amsterdam. The cargo was very rich and lucrative. These include 600,000 pounds of pepper, 250,000 pounds of cloves, 20,000 pounds of nutmegs and 200 pounds of mace. The first two trips to the East Indies were very lucrative and laid the foundation for the prosperity of the Netherlands during the 17th century. The detail shown from Vroom's painting is typical of this artist. Full of color, detail and historical awareness! See: https://lnkd.in/enj-JMy
