How ready is Europe’s Eastern Flank for the security challenges ahead? Yesterday, the Future of Security Programme's team at GLOBSEC presented the main findings of our latest report on Eastern Flank military readiness to members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Slovakia. The discussion focused on the progress achieved by Central and Eastern European countries in strengthening their defence capabilities throughout 2025, while also addressing the key challenges that continue to shape the region’s security environment. Participants exchanged views on differing national priorities in defence spending, the effectiveness of EU instruments supporting defence capability development, and the broader societal challenges linked to Europe’s deteriorating security landscape. Particular attention was devoted to the gap between political ambition and practical implementation. While significant progress has been achieved across the region, sustaining long-term defence modernization, strengthening resilience, and accelerating capability development remain critical tasks for both national governments and European institutions. Yesterday’s briefing built on the public launch of the report and provided an opportunity for an in-depth exchange with representatives of the diplomatic community in Bratislava on the future of regional defence preparedness and deterrence. The briefing series will continue in the coming weeks with engagements involving EU institutions, NATO Headquarters, and representatives of numerous national capitals across the wider region.
