76 years ago today, Robert Schuman set out a bold idea: that lasting peace in Europe would be built not by treaties alone, but by binding nations together through shared interests, shared institutions, and shared responsibility. That idea became the European Union. In 2026, the project faces a new test. War on the continent. Strategic competition. Democratic backsliding.
