GlobalFoundries' silicon photonics program began as the industry was exploring the idea that the same silicon platform powering the world's electronics could also carry light. Ethan Y. Bian joined GF in 2017 as our first silicon photonics R&D engineer at Fab 8 and continues to help lead the work today. Now, nearly ten years later, he has been named an Optica Fellow, one of the highest honors in photonics and optical engineering. Read our blog where he traces the evolution of silicon photonics from uncertain research territory to essential infrastructure, and explains why its most significant role, in AI data centers, is still ahead.
