The Woman Who Cultivated a Billion-Dollar Industry. Blueberries: a small, familiar fruit that’s easy to take for granted today. A century ago, they were anything but simple. Wild blueberries couldn’t be reliably grown or transported. They were seasonal, fragile, and mostly limited to where they naturally grew. Elizabeth Coleman White, working with botanist Frederick Coville, helped change that. Together they figured out how to cultivate blueberries consistently and how to handle them so they could survive storage and transport. Her contribution helped turn a foraged, local fruit into a commercially viable crop. Her work helped lay the foundation for an entirely new branch of commercial fruit production, reshaping what fresh produce could become when cultivation and distribution are thoughtfully solved. She also was the first woman to become a member of the American Cranberry Association. This clearly highlights how essential the role of women has been in agriculture and continues to be. At GWF, we connect this history to the present by empowering women who are shaping the future of fresh produce with the same kind of ingenuity and persistence.
