The EU now produces less than half the fish it consumes. In the 1990s, that figure was 70%. Speaking at Spain's National Aquaculture Congress, FAO's Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture Manuel Barange was direct: aquaculture is no longer a fisheries story - it is becoming a question of food security, strategic autonomy, and geopolitical competitiveness. Key figures from his address: · Global aquaculture has surpassed 100 million tonnes for the first time · 85% of future aquatic food production growth will come from aquaculture · The EU's seafood trade deficit stands at nearly $23bn annually · Africa will need to grow production by 75% just to maintain current per capita consumption For FAO, aquaculture is increasingly becoming part of the strategic global infrastructure that will determine how the world’s population is fed in the coming decades.
