GOTS Version 8.0 is here! The latest update to the world’s leading processing standard for organic textiles, The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), goes further than ever in strengthening accountability from fibre to finished product. What is new in GOTS 8.0? 📑 Updated due diligence requirements – Mandatory due diligence aligned with OECD guidelines and formalised governance requirements. 👩🏭 Increased worker protections – New criteria to mitigate risks from extreme heat, humidity and other weather conditions. 🧪 Strengthened chemical input controls – A clear GOTS Manufacturing Restricted Substances List, stricter PFAS controls, an endocrine disruptor assessment and strengthened GMO verification. ♻️ Circularity requirements introduced – Certified products can remain within GOTS certification across repair, resale and other circular business models. 🌍 Elaborated climate and environmental criteria – Clearer greenhouse gas emissions management (Scope 1 & 2), alongside strengthened air emissions, textile waste management and microfibre controls. 📦 New packaging criteria – Comprehensive rules promoting recycled content and restricting harmful materials. 🧵 Testing for durability strengthened – Expanded technical quality tests to support product longevity and compliance. This revision followed two public consultation rounds in 2025 and aligns with the ISEAL Code of Good Practice. For brands, manufacturers and certifiers navigating evolving regulatory and ESG expectations, GOTS 8.0 provides clear structure, strong safeguards and a future-facing framework for organic textile production. After the transition period, Version 8.0 becomes fully effective on 1 March 2027.
