🌟 Ismaili Innovator Spotlight: Reza Satchu 🌟 Meet Reza Satchu — a serial entrepreneur, investor, and educator whose companies have sold for billions, but whose deepest legacy may be the thousands of founders he's shaped. Reza was born in Mombasa, Kenya, and came to Canada at age seven when his family emigrated from East Africa as part of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's policy to welcome Ismaili refugees. His family settled in Scarborough, where his father worked as a real estate agent and his mother as a secretary. Over two decades, he co-founded and built six operating businesses that have collectively sold for more than $3.5 billion — including StorageNow (one of Canada's largest self-storage companies), KGS-Alpha Capital Markets, L.P. (sold to BMO), SupplierMarket (sold to Ariba for $925M), and Alignvest Student Housing (Canada's largest student housing operator, sold for $1.7B). Today he is Founder and Managing Partner of Alignvest Management Corporation. But ask Reza about his greatest impact, and he'll point to his students. For over 20 years — at Harvard Business School, the University of Toronto, and NEXT Canada — he has taught aspiring founders how to calibrate risk, make decisions with imperfect information, and learn from the consequences. Collectively, his students have founded over 500 ventures, raised over $10 billion in capital, and created more than 10,000 jobs. In 2010, he founded NEXT Canada, a philanthropic entrepreneurship program now 1,200+ alumni founders strong. Notably, all of his teaching at the University of Toronto and NEXT Canada has been done for no compensation — purely as a charitable endeavor. He also spent 11 years as Vice Chairman of the SickKids Hospital Foundation and now hosts the Founder Mindset podcast with the HBS Foundry.
