📍The migration of global telecom networks to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) is no longer a future roadmap item—it’s an active operational overhaul. Adversaries are leveraging "harvest now, decrypt later" strategies, making the race to secure 5G and upcoming 6G cores an immediate priority. According to the latest May 2026 Ericsson Technology Review report (attached below), the challenge has officially shifted from algorithm selection to global-scale deployment. The critical takeaways every telecom executive and network architect needs to know: 🔹 The Deployment Timeline: Clear deadlines are hardening. High-priority systems must migrate before 2031, with full transition wrapped up by 2035. 🔹 Geopolitical Algorithm Splits: While there is global consensus on NIST PQC standards, a tactical divide is forming. The EU recommends tested hybrid solutions for lattice-based cryptography, while the US, UK, and Canada lean toward standalone PQC. 🔹 Symmetric Cryptography is Safe: 5G’s current 128-bit symmetric core remains quantum-secure. However, looking ahead to 6G, we will likely see a shift to new 256-bit algorithms on the radio interface for performance reasons. 🔹 The Real-World Performance Trade-offs: PQC keys and certificates are significantly larger. While CPU performance holds up well (ML-KEM can actually outperform X25519 on servers), the sheer data size will impact PKI toolchains and connection establishment round-trips. 🔹 Cryptographic Agility is Non-Negotiable: Because implementation mistakes or side-channel vulnerabilities can always emerge, networks must have the fallback capability to update trust anchors via software. The consensus from Ericsson's experts is clear: QKD isn't the practical answer for scalable networks. PQC integrated deeply into IETF and 3GPP protocols is the only viable path forward. How is your organization balancing the performance overhead vs. security equation as we transition to a post-quantum world? Let’s discuss below. 👇 More updates available in this month's Modern Telco AI Networks Conference. https://lnkd.in/gxj-SN58 ♻️ Repost to help your network get started 👉Subscribe to #global5gevolution newsletter https://lnkd.in/ge9gsyjE 👉Subscribe to our YouTube https://lnkd.in/g8M7YvKq 👉Follow us on Kaneshwaran Govindasamy & Global 5G Evolution 👉Click comments #Telecom #PostQuantum #Cybersecurity #5G #6G #QuantumComputing #TechInnovation #Ericsson #crptography #security
