We have been diving into Ericsson's new June 2026 white paper, "6G-connectivity and beyond for the 2030's," and the shift from 5G to 6G isn’t just a speed upgrade—it’s a structural revolution. ​Here are the 4 biggest takeaways for the telco ecosystem: 🔹​From "AI-Powered" to "AI-Native": While 5G patches AI into specific functions, 6G is built on an AI-native architecture across all layers. It’s designed as an "intelligent fabric" where distributed autonomous AI agents collaborate in real time. 🔹​The Massive Uplink Squeeze: Next-gen use cases like Smart Glasses (XR), Autonomous Mobile Robots, and City Digital Twins will rely on constant media streams. This is triggering an unprecedented surge in uplink traffic volume, shifting engineering priorities. 🔹​Monetizing via Network APIs: Operators are moving beyond just transporting data. 6G will act as a service platform, exposing standardized APIs so developers can directly tap into network-native sensing (ISAC), compute, and spatial data. 🔹​80% Energy Reductions: By lean-designing initial access procedures and allowing network nodes to "sleep" longer during low traffic, 6G aims to cut infrastructure energy consumption by up to 80%. ​The industry is targeting the first implementable 3GPP specifications by early 2029, with initial rollouts dropping around 2030.
