This #WorldEnvironmentDay, meet Turbo. 🐢 At 27.5 kilograms, Turbo is the largest of 13 loggerhead sea turtles raised at James Cook University's (JCU) Turtle Health Research Centre thanks to The Glencore Loggerhead Project, a partnership between the university and Glencore’s Townsville Copper Refinery that is helping to advance JCU's research into the health and survival of post-hatchling and juvenile turtles. Loggerhead sea turtles are listed as endangered. Mortality rates for hatchlings can reach 70% and very little is known about the first years of their lives at sea. Last November, Turbo and his cohort were released into waters in Northeastern Australia, fitted with tracking devices that are now helping researchers learn more about the loggerhead's elusive early years. The release was carried out in collaboration with the Gudjuda Rangers from Gudjuda Aboriginal Corporation, for whom turtles hold deep cultural significance. Glencore is proud to support the survival of this species in Australian waters and around the world – and we'll be watching where Turbo goes next! Find out more: https://lnkd.in/du-yWxCq
