Championing Inclusive Cultures Where Everyone Belongs

I am so excited to see Cal State Fullerton launch its new "Teaching Through Polarization" initiative! In a world where navigating difficult conversations can feel increasingly hard, creating spaces that equip educators and students with the tools for constructive dialogue is more important than ever. I cannot wait to see the impact of this program and where it will go. This initiative hits incredibly close to home for me. Much of my own research into civic behavior centers on how we develop the skills to engage with one another across differences. Two key takeaways from my work underscore exactly why programs like this are vital: 1) The Power of Role Modeling: The single biggest impact on a student’s ability to practice healthy discourse and positive civic behavior is seeing it modeled by others. 2) The Influence of Social Relationships: Time and again, research participants cited their social relationships and role models (both positive and negative) as the foundational drivers of their own civic actions. We learn how to show up in the world by watching how the people around us show up. By prioritizing how we teach through polarization, CSUF is stepping up to cultivate the positive role models and constructive environments our students need.
