I have very illustrious law classmates. Eighty plus of us from the NUS Law Class of 1990 reunited for dinner last Saturday and were graced by the presence of current Dean Simester, our Dean Tan Lee Meng, Prof Beckman, Prof Leong Wai Kum and Justice Andrew Phang who had taught our cohort. Apparently our class reunion saw one of the best turnout, a few joined for several minutes via Zoom. Relative especially to our immediate seniors and juniors, the NUS law class of 1990 was ordinary, quiet, nondescript. Prof Tan highlighted that our cohort has "achieved a lot by any standards" and produced one diplomat (Singapore’s Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt H.E. Dominic Goh), two academics (Yeo Tiong Min and Alexander Loke), two Supreme Court judges (Justices Kannan Ramesh and Andre Maniam) and five Senior Counsels (Toh Kian Sing, Justice Kannan Ramesh, Yeo Tiong Min, Justice Andre Maniam, and Kuah Boon Theng), probably the cohort with the highest number of SCs. There are others in academia: Julie Huan (NUS Business School), Lum Kit-Wye and Joyce Lee (NTU NBS), Tan Lee Cheng (SUSS) and Deborah Lim (SIM GE). And the District Judges from NUS Class of 1990 include Chay Yuen Fatt, Lim Tse Haw and Shaiffudin Bin Saruwan. Not forgetting Tan Choon Kiat and Toh Hwee Lian at AGC. I'm pretty sure I missed out a couple more like Siva and Pui Kay. Then there are those who are managing partners; Azman Ja'afar (RHTLaw), Ng Wai King (Chairman of WongPartnership, member of NUS Board of Trustee, MAS Board), Pih Peng Lee (Altum Law) and Lisa Theng (CNPLaw). Classmates Lekha Nair and Jacqueline have been with the HDB for three decades, taking care of the legal aspects of the single largest asset owned by most Singaporeans. Raymond Lye has contributed decades to grassroots work at Sengkang even though he did not win at the 2022 GE. Three have passed away; Abbas, Cecil Woon who worked for 20+ years at Department of Justice Canada and Isabel Chng whose contribution to the Singapore patent system is remembered by way of the SMU IP Book Grant. Dean Simester mentioned "quality of alumni" and thanks to my illustrious law classmates, who contributed to that on behalf of our cohort. For entertainment, there was a "Forever Young" contest, which I think Prof Beckman would have won, if faculty were included! A side event was a book launch by Attlee Hue, who autographed his newly published book "DIY RIP" for us, https://lnkd.in/gzc9p_-u A loud shoutout of thanks to Lee Teck Leng, who did so much heavylifting organising the reunion, tracking down 200 classmates, digitalising our yearbook and Law 4 concert video. His energy is amazing and Prof Tan kindly described him as still "boisterous", the odd one from an otherwise quiet class. #NUSlaw Wai King Ng Azman Jaafar
