Public Policy Consultant at Open Evidence
📣 Finally published! Our new article in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization introduces a rigorous experimental method to assess when commercial practices online actually manipulate consumers. The proposed transaction test measures whether dark patterns lead consumers to choices that contradict their actual preferences, operationalising the legal concept of unfairness with experimental evidence. We believe this method, grounded in real consumer preferences and experimental evidence, can inform policymaking and enforcement. 📖 Co-authored with Francesco Bogliacino, Leonardo Pejsachowicz, and Francisco Lupiañez-Villanueva. Open access: https://lnkd.in/dx2Uxb3b The article greatly benefited from discussions with the policy and scientific community working on these topics, including Finn Lützow-Holm Myrstad, Andreas Maaløe Jespersen, Egelyn Braun, AgustÃn Reyna, Marie Potel-Saville, Harry Brignull, Emanuele Ciriolo, Clemens Schubert, Marcello Negrini, Anne-Jel Hoelen, and Nicholas McSpedden-Brown.
