The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has launched a comprehensive, multi-layered safety campaign designed to enforce regulations and expand its regional regulatory presence along the country’s inland waterways. The move is also aimed at protecting the livelihoods of thousands of families and businesses that rely on water transport, alongside the commissioning of 200 Safety Guards under the “Life Jackets for Safety and Livelihood" initiative. Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, emphasized that combining community education with strict enforcement is a decisive step toward restoring safety and security on Ghana’s waterways. Moving forward, he noted that the mandate for all water travelers remains uncompromising with the strict enforcement of a “No Life Jacket, No Travel” policy at all crossing points nationwide. The Director-General of the GMA, Dr Kamal-Deen Ali in his remarks announced the distribution of 20,000 life jackets during the event, moving the Authority beyond words and into practical, lifesaving action. To ensure strict compliance with these safety rules, the newly commissioned Safety Guards will be actively deployed across 125 critical crossing points. Supporting this massive on-the-ground enforcement, he said is a strategic regional expansion, which includes a newly established Inland Water Office in Akosombo alongside satellite offices in Kete-Krachi, Kpando, Saboba, and Wa, with further regional expansion already underway. Present at the high-profile ceremony were the Deputy Minister for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Members of Parliament, Members of the GMA Board, traditional leaders, and representatives from the security services.
