The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) is pushing for the urgent ratification of the ILO C185 Convention. This means moving toward a new biometric “passport” for our sailors that will finally put an end to decades of travel restrictions and difficult visa processes in foreign ports. Currently, many of our seafarers face tough "sanctions" abroad, especially in places like Brazil, where they are often denied the right to go ashore to “freshen up” after months at sea. This new system is about more than just security; it’s about the mental well-being of our crew and ensuring they are treated with the respect they deserve as they represent Ghana across the globe. The Director-General of GMA, Dr Kamal-Deen Ali, the Ministry of Transport and all relevant stakeholders are working closely with Parliament to make this a reality quickly.
