Ghana is making an aggressive move to position its maritime professionals on the global stage. Speaking at the International Maritime Employers' Council (IMEC) conference in Southampton, UK, the Deputy Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Mubarick Masawudu, urged international shipping giants to tap into the country's highly disciplined, culturally adaptable, and English-proficient youth workforce to help fill the widening global maritime labour gap. To bridge historical gaps, the DDG highlighted the newly developed National Seafarer Development and Placement Programme (NSDPP), a coordinated cross-government framework designed to scale Ghana's registered seafarer workforce from 5,500 to 20,000 by 2036. This strategic initiative targets guaranteed sea-time placements through locked-in partnerships with global shipowners, while expanding pipelines into technical and hospitality roles. Backed by rigorous European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) audits and an upcoming end-to-end digital certification platform, Ghana is offering global employers a secure, top-tier talent pipeline. With established partnerships already yielding fruit with major lines like Hafnia and Pacific International Lines, the GMA is calling on global crew managers to look beyond traditional labour markets and grant Ghanaian cadets the critical berthing placements they need to prove their worth.
