Heritage protection or modern building automation – why not both? In Kampen, the Netherlands, the listed Hogere Burgerschool has been transformed into a modern residential and care complex without losing its historic character. This was made possible through early technical planning, close collaboration between all project partners, and intelligent door and window automation from GEZE. The solutions implemented combine the preservation of historic architecture with the requirements of modern living and care: ✔️ Networked window drives GEZE Slimchain for natural ventilation, smoke and heat extraction (SHE) functionality and energy-efficient operation ✔️ KNX integration for central control of windows, lighting and sun protection, conveniently operated via a tablet ✔️ Automatic doors with Slimdrive EMD-F for barrier-free, secure passageways, even for people with reduced mobility ✔️ Customised integration of the technology into the listed building structure whilst preserving the characteristic semicircular arched windows This is how a vacant school building became a future-proof place for living and care, combining historical charm with modern building automation and supporting independent living in the long term.
