Of #Comics   … and #Neurons: This delightful little book was created by #Neuroscience doctors #MatteoFarinella and #HanaRoš. The first edition of the #Neurocomic was printed in 2013 by #NobrowPress (London). #StoryTelling https://lnkd.in/dMACSgDV Luigi #Galvani (1737-1798) was one of the first to understand that nerves conduct electricity. His discovery came a bit too soon for #Neurophysiology but, at least, a conversation about him at Lord Byron’s villa, inspired #MaryShelley’s modern Prometheus. Ivan #Pavlov (1849-1936) established that just by being exposed to a primarily neutral stimulus, such as the sound of a bell, a physiological response could be triggered. He did so by #Conditioning dogs to salivate, without food being present. Camillo #Golgi (1843-1926) was wrong to think of the nervous system as a whole structure. But his “Black Reaction” was right on the money by using #SilverChromate, to selectively alter the appearance of microscopic tissue by staining it. Santiago #RamónYCajal (1852-1934) is considered as the father of Neuroscience for not only discovering that the #NervousSystem is made up of individual entities (Neurons), but also for proving that though separated from each other, they are connected by synapse. Sir Charles Scott #Sherrington (1857-1952) gave #Synapse its name. He also coined the name of a concept, that blew my mind back in the day, #Propioception. Sir #BernardKatz (1911–2003) deepened our understanding of synapse and the junctions where they occur. Realizing (alongside #PaulFatt) that the amount of neurotransmitter release in a synapse is #Quantal, meaning there's a “smallest possible quantity”. Sir #AlanLloydHodgkin (1914-1998) and Sir #AndrewHuxley (1917-2012) spent three summers at Plymouth’s Marine Laboratory, fishing for squid.
