In 1950, Gustav Heinemann held two offices at once: Interior Minister in Adenauer's cabinet, and President of the Synod of the Protestant Church. When rearmament came to cabinet, he objected and quit — a man who clearly already knew what his own words would cost him. His closing address in Essen ends in a line that has outlived the moment it was spoken in: "Your lords are going. Our Lord is coming." Not a slogan. Not bravado. A statement about who actually has the last word — and it cuts in every direction, including at the people fond of quoting it.
