In 1979, Georgia Tech biology student Richie Bland drove from campus to Six Flags Over Georgia, where he had a 25-pound foam and rubber Yellow Jacket costume made — based on an insect body design he'd drawn on a napkin. During the Florida game that season, Bland hid the costume in a janitor’s closet and changed into it during halftime. He ran past security and onto the field – and that’s the story of how Buzz became Georgia Tech’s official mascot.
