A new study led by The George Institute shows that a community-based care model through Project ARTEMIS can significantly reduce depression, self-harm and suicide risk among adolescents in India’s urban slums — where these conditions remain leading causes of death and disability. Implemented across 60 slum communities, where young people face additional pressures such as poverty, overcrowding, limited awareness and access to mental healthcare, and social barriers. The model combined digital mental health care with community-based anti-stigma campaigns, supporting adolescents identified with common mental disorders to access care through trained primary healthcare providers. After one year, those receiving the intervention showed significantly improved mental health outcomes compared to those who did not participate, alongside greater awareness and reduced stigma.
