Galamsey, illegal small-scale gold mining in Ghana, devastates the environment, pollutes water sources, and undermines local communities, requiring urgent government action to curb its spread.Advocacy against illegal mining is essential to protect ecosystems, human rights, and economic stability while promoting sustainable development. By addressing environmental damage, human exploitation, and economic losses through stronger regulations, formalization of artisanal mining, economic diversification, and community empowerment, advocacy can mitigate the harmful impacts of illegal mining Together with students, youth, and community leaders, the STEP Project team is raising awareness, inspiring change, and promoting legal, sustainable livelihoods in illegal mining communities. Led by Aba Dodoo and George Dela Coffie , in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional YMCA, and proudly supported by the World YMCA Africa Alliance YMCA Government of Canada.
