Donggyu Jeon, Gil Souza and I are excited to share that our recent study, "Safety Defects and Fuel Efficiency in the Automotive Industry" was just accepted for publication at Production and Operations Management Society (POMS). Leveraging multiple econometric analyses, we demonstrate that engine-related technologies, adopted to enhance the miles-per-gallon (MPG) on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, and implemented in response to federal fuel efficiency standards, come with unexpected and serious safety risks for consumers. We also provide detailed guidance for automotive firms on how to continue the important work of improving the MPG on ICE cars, but to do so in a more safety-conscious manner. The lead author on this paper, Donggyu Jeon, is a PhD candidate from Indiana University - Kelley School of Business and will be on the academic job market this coming fall. Donggyu Jeon piloted this meticulously conducted research from start to finish, and presented our findings to leaders at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA.
