While politicians gather for Almedalen Week here in Sweden, we have had the opportunity to present sustainable solutions and our success in reducing food waste on cruise ships during Food Week 2026 in Basel. A major trade fair for innovators and decision-makers from all over the world. A big thank you to our partner COLUMBIA signature and Victor Mancilla Gonzalez who presented our joint insights and successes under the clever headline: Plate smart - rethinking food waste on the high seas! Here is why tackling food waste at sea is so important: ♻️ High Environmental Impact: Food on cruise ships requires massive energy to transport, store, and refrigerate. Wasting it multiplies the carbon footprint of the voyage. ♻️ Disposal Challenges: Under maritime regulations (MARPOL), ground food waste can legally be discharged into the open sea under specific conditions. However, this introduces excess nutrients into marine ecosystems, disrupting local wildlife and fueling harmful algal blooms. ♻️ High Purchasing Costs: Food is one of the highest operating expenses for cruise lines. Since ships buy high-quality ingredients in massive volumes, even small percentage reductions in waste lead to huge cost savings. #greatchefswasteless #everygramcounts #platsmart #lesswastemoresealife Daniel Oddhammar funder of Generation Waste
