Cristiani Vieira Machado, Vice-president of Education, Information and Communication at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, was nominated as an outstanding woman in #leadership by the SPI - Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação in Portugal. Vieira Machado said the gender balance in decision-making in STI is improving slowly in Brazil, but that important imbalances and asymmetries remain. “Although the proportion of women is increasing among total researchers in some countries and scientific fields, men are predominant in decision-making positions in academic institutions, as well as in politics and in business,” she said.
