What can rural headteachers in Ghana and the Philippines teach us about leading for inclusion and equity? In a new #WorldEducationBlog post, Dr Susan Vicente Villarente, a special education educator, and Gideon Kwasi Animah, PhD candidate at the University of Bath, share insights from their comparative research into how rural school leaders are advancing inclusive education in challenging contexts. Their study explores how headteachers in Ghana and the Philippines move beyond managing schools to become advocates, community partners, mentors and champions for learners facing barriers linked to poverty, disability, geography and social inequality. From finding creative solutions to infrastructure challenges and absenteeism, to strengthening inclusive teaching practices and supporting learners with disabilities, the experiences of these school leaders show that equity is not simply a policy goal, it is a daily commitment. The blog highlights an important lesson for education systems worldwide: achieving inclusive and equitable education requires not only strong policies, but also empowering the leaders who turn those policies into meaningful action.
