A captivating roundtable titled ‘Echoes of Elegance: Art Deco Jewellery Between Heritage and Contemporary Revival’ brought together a remarkable panel of voices to explore exactly that. The conversation, moderated by Donatella Zappieri, featured jewellery historian Amanda Triossi, collector Alexandre Torroni, and designers Alice Villa and Valérie Danenberg, each offering a unique lens through which to view the enduring magic of Art Deco. WHAT MAKES A CENTURY-OLD DESIGN STYLE MORE MODERN THAN EVER? From the geometry and stylisation of 1920s Paris to the understated elegance of contemporary Milanese design, the discussion revealed how Art Deco continues to influence both aesthetics and values in the jewellery world today. Whether through Belperron-inspired craftsmanship, minimalist forms built on heritage, or new materials like titanium and coral used in surprising ways, Art Deco emerged as more than a style: it is a language. One of precision, emotion, balance, and movement. That notion of movement, in fact, became a recurring theme. Jewellery that dances. Jewellery that transforms. Pieces that surprise — a teapot ring hiding a Chinese lucky knot, a pendant that opens to reveal a floating aquamarine. These are the creations of the New Gen Déco project, imagined by Master’s students from the IED in Rome under Amanda Triossi’s guidance, and exhibited for the first time at the fair. Their shared instinct? A desire to reinterpret the past while designing for the future, with sustainability, wearability, and storytelling at heart. As the panellists shared their final thoughts, one idea rang especially clear: Art Deco is not nostalgia. It is continuity. A recognisable style, yes — but also a way of thinking about form, function, and beauty in an increasingly fast-paced world. “Perfection never goes out of fashion,” said Valérie Danenberg. “What was modern then is still modern now,” added Alexandre Torroni. “And the new generation pushes us to do better,” concluded Alice Villa.
