Gas Networks Ireland welcomes the decision by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) on the Biomethane Connections Policy Review. This updated framework is an important step in ensuring connection policy reflects evolving market needs. The changes to the economic test and financial security requirements will improve the viability of connecting biomethane plants of all sizes directly to the gas network. We also welcome the introduction of a framework for the Central Grid Injection(CGI) facility. This infrastructure is currently under construction and will be owned and operated by Gas Networks Ireland. The CGI will support producers located too far from the network for a direct connection, by enabling the transport of biomethane for injection and expand access across Ireland. These measures represent meaningful progress in facilitating biomethane development and will support Ireland’s ambition to deliver 5.7 TWh of biomethane by 2030. We look forward to continuing to work with the CRU and industry stakeholders to advance the growth of renewable gas in Ireland.
