Hooray! It's Tattoo Tuesday! "Toot" A year after America celebrated its 200th birthday, the classic rock band from Los Angeles, Toto, arrived on the scene. A year later, they released their first album under the same name, "Toto." (NOT Toot!) That first album made a mark, but when their hit "Rosanna" was released in 1982, Toto was officially on the map. Even though I loved that tune, as a drummer, I hated it. Jeff Porcaro's groove on that track was so deceptively difficult that I could never fully replicate it. To this day, nailing that groove is considered a rite of passage for serious drummers. While Toto won 6 Grammy Awards (including Album of the Year) and sold 40-50 million albums, they have yet to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They have a song that sums that up for me… "Cruel" Even though they've been denied a place in Cleveland's Rock Hall, it's completely understandable that someone would want to memorialize Toto's logo on their skin. I can imagine how the conversation went between Angel (the guy wanting the tattoo) and the receptionist at Dave's Incredible Tattoo Shop in "Chinatown"… Angel: "Your Google reviews indicate that Dave is THE MAN to do a killer back tattoo of my favorite band." Receptionist: "Sorry, but 'Dave's Gone Skiing.'" Angel: "Bummer. Anyone else here who could do this for me?" Receptionist: "Well, 'Georgy Porgy' is incredible, but he's in 'Africa'." Angel: "Any other tattooists available?" Receptionist: "Well, 'Pamela' is new here, but that tattoo is going to take hours, and she's here 'Till the End.' Want to go with Pamela?" Angel: "I'm 'Goin' Home' tomorrow morning, so let's go with Pamela." After Pamela finally finished, Angel realized that Pamela misspelled Toto as "Toot." Angel's lip started quivering. Tattoo artist Pamela's response: "Angel Don't Cry!" The moral of this story: Spell check twice, ink once. Agree? Have a tattastic Tuesday!
