In 2022, the UN began negotiating a global plastics treaty.  This was the first legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution. It was supposed to be done by 2024, and we still don't have one. At the last round of negotiations in Geneva, 234 fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists attended, outnumbering national delegations, scientists, and indigenous peoples combined. 56% of opposition to an ambitious treaty came from chemical and petrochemical companies (not a surprise there!) The same ones expanding plastic production every year. Over 100 countries support a strong treaty. 💪 One that limits production and bans dangerous products. A small group of oil-producing nations has stood in the way. This is what the regulation gap looks like up close. Yes, the policy fix we need exists.
