It’s been a potentially momentous two weeks in the debate over what role open-source/open-weight AI will and should play in the broader AI landscape: Headline-grabbing model releases from Moonshot and Alibaba out of China; a less headline-grabbing release in the US; talk of restrictions on Chinese AI in Washington; and a big speech on AI from Xi Jinping. ➡️ I wrote up some thoughts on what all of this means when taken together — and found out that apparently there's a character limit on LinkedIn (thank God), so here's a (short!) article for you.
