If you spend any time on engineering TikTok or YouTube, chances are you've come across Griffin Furlong, P.E. (better known as Civil Griffin). His educational content has amassed millions of views by breaking down everything from land development design and engineering software to career advice for aspiring and early-career civil engineers. As someone without a civil engineering degree working in workforce strategy, Griffin's videos became one of my go-to resources for understanding the technical side of the profession. I also had the opportunity to read his book, Boundless, which chronicles his journey growing up with homelessness and housing insecurity and the perseverance that led him to become his high school's valedictorian and pursue civil engineering at FSU. Since writing the book, Griffin has graduated, become a licensed professional engineer working in land development, and has become possibly the industry's most well known content creator, using his reach to make civil engineering more accessible while inspiring and equipping the next generation of professionals. It was a privilege to sit down with Griffin to discuss engineering education, mentorship, leadership, and what firms can do to better develop emerging engineers.
