On this last day of June—the month I was born and the month we celebrate Pride—I want to honor an extraordinary young woman who has just crossed the threshold into womanhood. In the words of her aunt during her candle-lighting ceremony: “Today, we stand together in unity and love to bless our beloved Rhianna Orbelina Gutierrez—a young girl stepping into womanhood enveloped in divine light and love. True to her name, Rhianna, which means wisdom, she carries a deep understanding beyond her years. And as her middle name, Orbelina, promises, she truly is one who brings joy to everyone she meets. Long before her arrival, her parents awaited her with immense love, hoping that this tiny human would one day chase her own wildest dreams and fulfill her purpose each day. Throughout her life, Rhianna has bestowed a beautiful light upon us all—a light that shines brighter with every passing day, fueled by her curiosity, her joy, and the deep love of the family and friends who surround her.” Later, everyone gathered around her with this promise: “May Rai always look around and know she is never walking alone. We, the village that surrounds her, pledge our arms to shield her, our shoulders to lift her, and our voices to echo her worth. May she feel the invisible, unbreakable canopy of our collective love holding her up, giving her the wings to fly, and always providing a safe, warm home to return to.” Your mother, Maricela Rodriguez-Gutierrez, M.D., changed my life in 2002. Maricela Rodriguez-Gutierrez, M.D. is one of the pillars who has helped shape the woman you are becoming—a fierce lioness who will always protect you while encouraging you to journey farther than she herself has traveled. Rai, never forget that your village was built through generations of resilience, sacrifice, courage, intelligence, and the audacity to walk into rooms where people who looked like us were often told we did not belong. Every step we have taken has become part of the foundation beneath your feet. As one final blessing, your aunt prayed: “Rai – may you look upon the world not just for what it is, but for what it can be. Allow your imagination to dream wildly, your intuition to see beyond the surface, and a compassionate heart that recognizes the interconnectedness of all living things. You are one with the universe. You are made in God’s image and love. May your life be a gentle force that makes the world more beautiful each day.” And Rai answered with words I hope she carries for the rest of her life: “I am in tune with the Universe. I am worthy of everything good. I am whole on my own. I am becoming the person I dreamt of being. I am safe in this moment.” May every child grow up knowing they are loved, wanted, worthy, chosen, light, and love. That is the greatest inheritance any village can leave the next generation.
