But while industrial farming faces a severe dual-cost shock from volatile inputs and rising fuel, agroecological farmers are proving that resilience pays off. Take Sebastiaan Huisman, a farmer in Poland who hasn't used a drop of chemical fertilizer in 18 years. This year, producing his own organic compost was €2 cheaper per kilo of nitrogen than buying synthetic alternatives—saving his farm €40,000.
