This is a very moving illustration of lidos as civic infrastructure: as vitally important "places of belonging". Many of Australia's public outdoor pools were built as war memorial pools. Honouring the service men and women of the first and second world wars and the conflicts that have followed, and providing important places for recovery and reconnection. Of course they're not just for veterans, they support the whole community: providing somewhere to learn and practice the life-saving and life-enhancing art of swimming, and to find belonging, connection and joy. Our surviving lidos here in the UK are also reservoirs of our shared heritage - the mineworkers who built a network of 57 pools across Wales; the unemployed workers whose labour built so many pools during the Depression; the ordinary people who subscribed to fund their pools' construction, and the civic leaders whose ambition created these health-giving spaces that have served generation after generation.
