We often think of environmental monitoring as something that happens later in an offshore wind project. But what if valuable data could be collected while other site investigations are already underway? At Hywind Tampen, we added Passive Acoustic Monitoring to a SEAWATCH® buoy campaign, collecting six months of continuous marine mammal data alongside metocean measurements. Working with SAMS Enterprise, we were able to: 🐬 Monitor 13 species using a combination of automated detection and expert analysis 🌦️ Identify clear seasonal and behavioural patterns 📈 Gather continuous, high-resolution data through a non-invasive approach. The findings suggest that collecting environmental data earlier could do more than improve environmental understanding. It could also help reduce project uncertainty and avoid delays.
